When it is your turn to call, you have four choices:
Passo ➔ Pass
Licitar / Dar um lance ➔ To Bid
Dobro ➔ Double (Used if you think the opponents can't make their contract)
Redobro ➔ Redouble (Used to defy an opponent's double)
The hierarchy of the suits from lowest to highest remains exactly the same, but the names change.
Paus (♣) ➔ Clubs [Lowest]
Ouros (♦) ➔ Diamonds
Copas (♥) ➔ Hearts
Espadas (♠) ➔ Spades [Highest Suit]
Sem Trunfo (ST) ➔ No Trump [Highest Denomination]
To state a bid, you combine the number of tricks (1 through 7) with the suit or No Trump. In written notes, Portuguese players use ST for No Trump.
1 Paus ➔ 1 Club
1 Ouros ➔ 1 Diamond
1 Copas ➔ 1 Heart
1 Espadas ➔ 1 Spade
1 ST (Sem Trunfo) ➔ 1 No Trump
O Paus (Clubs)
O Ouros (Diamonds)
A Copas (Hearts)
A Espadas (Spades)
Sem Trunfo is masculine (O Sem Trunfo), so it always uses the masculine numbers:
Um Sem Trunfo
Dois Sem Trunfo
